Getting Theatrical
I recently watched a movie in the theatre and decided immediately after that to make a post.
You could say the ghost of this blog haunted me with tauntings of a new post.
I like theatres. Personally, the older their history the better because beautiful architecture is just nomnomnom. But in general watching movies in a theatre just enhances the experience in tenfold compared to watching it at home on a smaller screen. It's just not as immersive and I don't feel like I'm there with the characters or as I like to word it 'It doesn't feel like I ate the movie'.
I went to watch Twisters because a) I had heard good things about it, b) I wanted to watch a disaster movie on the big screen at least once after spending 90% of my childhood watching it on a TV and c) It seemed like a good way to entertain my cousin (you got a shout-out).
Theatres are just interesting places to me in general because it kind of draws parallels to the airport to me. You're here for one reason but while you're here, you might as well engage in some slight consumerism. To cleanse the palate.
I like popcorn and a drink as much as the next person (otherwise are you truly a movie-goer?), but the prices are crazy. The better the theatre, the more insane the inflation. And you can't sneak in snacks because some theatres have screenings. (See, airport parallels). When I went with the cousin, somehow two drinks and two popcorn buckets ended up being more expensive than the tickets. I may not be a math genius but that's just evil corporate greed.
Anyways back to theatres. It's always a bazillion degrees cold and everyone always forget that and ends up freezing or close to it. Still, as a summer hater, I'll never complain too much about the cold lest you freeze my bones. Then you are submitted to a gazillion 30 minute ads and we ended up watching the same trailers twice which made me eye-twitch feverishly. If you're gonna make me watch unskippable ads at least make it the classics.
The movie itself was a solid 3.5/5 and I don't see any point of a review because it was fun and silly and I watched it for no great reason and so I will not taint that otherwise nonsensical memory for the sake of literary bliss.
I suppose like theatres I love all places that are tied to a specific emotion and in this case, movie-going has always been a group or duo activity and as such will always bring me a weird comfort even though I do not trust my safety in a cold oven.
It does suck that due to high prices, lack of mobility, not great movie selections, and a number of other factors, going to a theatre just isn't as feasible as it once was. That being said, whenever I remotely get a chance I will be inconveniencing myself and everyone around me to watch a movie.
I also do have a theory that I could watch a god awful movie and still enjoy if the atmosphere was good so...
Theatres are just fun and if you ever get a chance to catch a flick, do it.
Also the other kind of theatres, the on-stage, musical-ones are also really cool from what I've seen from inside my screen so hopefully one day I get to see it with my own four eyes.
