Love Is (not) Blind

This post was actually a long time coming actually. I've postponed this idea since last year because I felt I didn't have much to say and couldn't word it properly back then. Thankfully, I believe I can do it justice now ;)  For context: Today we'll be talking about the Netflix reality TV show Love is Blind.  So, I just watched the Love Is Blind reunion of it's sixth season. And it left me with a lot of thoughts.  Reality dating shows are toxic. Shocking opinion I know. But I'm talking specifically about Love Is Blind in this post so do keep that in mind.  This show, unlike it's sister shows, LIB is the definition of entertainment that is more dependent on making viewers concerned for the contestants as a method of getting viewership and people to talk about it.  Let's talk about the questionable methods of Love Is Blind. (Synopsis of the show: It's 15 guys and gals who date in pods that prevent them from seeing each other for 10 days in the span of ...

Be Mine, Valentine?

Love is in the air!  Since it's the month of romance I figured we could pull a repeat of Halloween and do some rankings and reviewing bunched up. This way I get through the movies and they don't need separate posts.  I have no clue whether it was intentional or subconscious but for some reason, the few movies I have watched so far this month have all been rom-coms, so perhaps this is a sign that I was meant to eventual make this post.  Let's get to it. Also,  SPOILER ALERT AHEAD!!!  PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!! 1. When Harry Met Sally (1989) It's an interesting one to start of with for sure as the movie has quite a reputation for itself as a classic rom-com. With it championed by acclaimed writer and rom-com genius herself Nora Ephron, I went into this movie not sure of what to see but expecting good stuff.  And it delivers, for the most part, that is. I'd describe it as a solid 4/5 rom-com with solid chemistry and writing. Which something I have been asking for...

Percy Jackson, a faithful adaptation?

Tis yapping season and to yap is to breathe and so I have arrived.  But first before we review and slightly desecrate a piece of media that is very beloved to me and to many we must celebrate it's existence. AAAAAAAH THERE'S A PERCY JACKSON SHOWWWW.  Okay so now that that's out of the way let's talk about the show. Just to preface, I'm not going to be talking about the casting because I like it and also have the decency not to hate on literal children for the choice made by professionals. You know who you are.  I'm not going to spoiler territory completely and review each episode but just talk about the stuff I liked and disliked about the show.  The main thing I had a grievance with and this hurts to say, was the writing and pacing of the show. The scenes were written too short and not given enough time the breathe like most of the fight sequences and scenes that were more pivotal in the books. The kids always knew what was happening and it took away from the m...

Why Period Romances Work

Happy New Year besties!  I've been dead for about a month now but I return! After having absolutely nothing of much regard to babble about I had, quite sadly retired to my sad corner and watched stuff and held my opinions o myself (and my family). I found that though some were interesting, there wasn't much to be said that hadn't already been...said.  That is...until I saw Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (1995) and immediately fell in love with it. I mean, it's Jane Austen. What's shocking there.  The more I thought about it though, the more I realized that I hadn't felt so occupied and invested in a romance story as much as I had been while watching the film. Period films and shows held my undivided attention like nothing else in the romance genre. And this is coming from a self-proclaimed romance connoisseur.  There's just something within them that connects with people (and me) that the average romance can't do as well with certain exceptions of c...

The Archies Is Average

Let's paint a picture shall we? Imagine you are someone who grew up in the late 2000's and 2010's watching classic movies like 'Zindegi Na Milegi Dobara' and 'Dil Dhadakne Do'. Now imagine finding out that the same talented director was behind both these wonderful feel-good films. Naturally, you'd be waiting for their next film with eager eyes and ears right?  Well, that's the exact position I was in last year when I discovered while scrolling on Netflix that Zoya Akhtar had a new film up her sleeves. Absolute excitement. Keep in mind this would be her first movie in 2-3 years after Gully Boy and her TV show Made in Heaven (with only the one season at the time), which were both equally successful and well-done at the same time. What could go wrong?  Apparently a lot. And this section isn't about the movie. Oh, we'll get there. The marketing of the movie was already privy to mixed reactions. Coming from similarly happy and excited Zoya fans an...

Superhero Fatigue

I have it, you have it and everyone's mother has it.  Superhero fatigue is real and it's here.  I guess no one (that I know) could've seen it coming when Marvel decided to create their first superhero blockbuster that this was going to be a thing. And a pretty huge one at that. But it did. And with Marvel expanding universe with re-boots and sequels, DC polished their shoes and made the choice to join the race as well. The impact of which we feel to this day. Which is what I wanted to talk about. Today. The now of it all. The consequences of those desicisons that the big-wigs at Marvel and DC made. Because of that we've gotten (uptil 2019) three clunky, but otherwise heartfelt messes out of Marvel with a two-part ending that was historic in it's on right and from DC, a solid batman trilogy and other stuff not so memorable. But they made comic books, something that was considered a 'weird-kid' activity into a cool thing. And as they got more and more success ...

Boo! (hoo-hoo)

Happy Halloween!  To get into the true spirit of the day, I figured I'd talk about what I think is rotting the horror genre to further dull your insipid souls.  Consider this a whodunnit of sorts, where we sift through and pin point our culprit. Because unfortunately we do have one. If there's something I've noticed throughout the years as a horror fan (who gets rattled so quick), it's the deterioration in the quality of horror film-making. Not to say there aren't any exceptions of course. Also, quick shout-out to the parent of the horror genre who literally made it a codified genre after it's release, Dracula (1931). As someone who enjoyed the experience of reading the book by Bram Stoker, it's nice to see appreciation for frightfully good storytelling through film too. So let's review our first suspect. 1. Psychological thrillers/horror movies Psychological horror looks more into the mind and the psyche and how fear is a tool that can be used to contro...
